"Comparison is the thief of joy"

As you may have noticed, some of the coaches have been using the whiteboard to write a quote of the day. Some are simply to make you smile while others are meant to be inspiring.

I've been holding off from writing my own quotes simply because I love to see other coaches' perspectives. But trust me, I have a long list of cheesy quotes. One of my favorite quotes in relation to competing in CrossFit is:

"Comparison is the thief of joy"

When it comes to our fitness, I think most of us would agree that there are days we feel defeated simply because of a bad day, or our peers appear to be lapping us. But why? Unless you're training for a sport or have specific goals, why let yourself get down? And please don't tell me it's your personality type…

Yes, you need to assess by looking around the room a bit and seeing what others are doing. And yes, competition is a healthy and relative aspect of life. But comparing yourself to a 25-year-old stud, or getting frustrated because you can no longer do the weights you used to do, is unhealthy. Things change…

Your goals are simple: put in the work, and improve either mentally and/or physically each workout. If you can't push physically, work on consistency or mental toughness. If you can go hard, do it now because this can be fleeting. However, leave the negative self-talk at the door. If you're still feeling melancholy about your workout, try complimenting or recognizing someone else's success.

Most importantly, have fun. You don't have to parade around with a beaming smile all class long, but suffering with your friends is better than suffering alone. The moral of the story here: don't compare; assess instead.

If you have a favorite quote, please share.
