Don’t Let it Defeat You

When your parents told you not to do something as a child, what did you want to do?  Or, how about when your teachers told you that something was off limits?  Perhaps your boss at one point, has doubted your abilities and given some special project to someone who he/she thought to be better suited for the job.  How do these scenarios make you  feel?  Chances are, they are the drive and the motivation that you need to do just what these individuals told you that you couldn’t.

How is the case any different at the gym?  Why is it that when a WOD comes up that you are absolutely petrified of; that you are unsure as to whether or not you will own it or it will own you, you back off?  Do you perform a different WOD that day?  Or do you just completely skip out on the gym all together?

Today’s WOD brought back some bad memories for me from the Northeast Regionals in 2009.  There was a heavy thruster/burpee WOD that completely annihilated me.  To this day, I swore I’d never perform this WOD again.

Then came today….both of those dreaded movements with the addition of a row (another device that I loathe).  During the course of the day, I had plenty of opportunities to NOT do this workout.  First, I argued that I should do it at L2 and make it more cardiovascular taxing (a modality of fitness that I DO NOT really need to work on).  Then, DP said he wanted to give me an alternate workout to play to my weaknesses for the SCF Competition Team.  Lastly, I reasoned that no other woman had done it at L3, thus, leaving me without a goal.  Then Debbie came in…that excuse was out the window.

To be honest, any of these excuses could’ve worked, but what kept me from ultimately opting out, was that I could not allow a workout to defeat me.  I don’t respond well to people who try to defeat me in everyday life, so why would I allow three movements to get me down?

All throughout the day,  I kept saying, “Don’t let it defeat you.”  When you feel this way, you have an obligation to get to the gym.  An obligation to face your fears.  An obligation to power through that WOD.

An obligation to not let it defeat you.

Are you taking time out to do banded stretches, lacrosse ball rolling, and foam rollers??

This blog is exactly the conversation I was having last week! In my late 20′s a running acquaintance told, “sure, you are good at running flat 5 & 10k’s, but you’ve never run a hill before…” so of course this is when I switched to all hilly trails & marathons for running! Don’t ever tell me I can’t do something!
But don’t insult me either. We all need that perfect balance of dare & encouragement to bring out our best! Rob keeps telling me I’ve been taking it too easy on myself lately and that I need to tap in to that competitor, beast mode he says? I need to find that fire….so please someone dare me into something! I’ve been too comfortable with pretty good and need to find more, my heart rate experiments show its in there waiting to be found. I just wish I had your drive LP

When I read the title “Don’t Let It Defeat You” I immediately went to food choices. LP’s defeat is a super challenging WOD L3 yikes. My WODs are going good, posting some L1′s, RX’s and running a mile. I am thrilled. My defeat is food. Don’t let that chocolate bar defeat you or that buffalo chicken get you. Don’t let that third glass of wine derail you from your goal. I get it! What defeats me is me. I have to own it because that chocolate candy dosn’t get in my mouth on its own now does it. Don’t get derailed from your goal. What’s your defeat?

Great Blog. I refuse to let my back defeat me. I may have to do my JV WOD but I’m not going to stop trying to get back to regular WOD. Thanks for the continuous motivation.
