I am always amazed at the amount of charity work in which our clients at SCF participate. It seems that almost monthly someone is swimming, biking, running, walking, or hiking for a cause. What a fantastic way to use your physical capabilities to give back to the community! Many of you know Chip Walsh (Coach K’s brother-in-law). Next month, he will embark on a 200 mile bike ride for a GREAT cause. Please read his story below:
Next month, I will be riding in the Pan Mass Challenge for the third consecutive year. On Saturday, August 7th my teammates and I will depart from Sturbridge, Massachusetts at 5:30am and ride 112 miles to the Mass Maritime Academy in Bourne, Massachusetts. The following morning we will leave Bourne at 5:30am and ride 88 miles to Provincetown, Massachusetts. Why do we do this?
The Pan Mass Challenge (“PMC”) is a two day, 200 mile bicycle ride to raise money for the Jimmy Fund at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in support of the fight against cancer in children and adults. Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has raised $270 million dollars and is the largest single contributor to the Jimmy Fund. The money raised through PMC accounts for 50% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. Despite the state of our national economy last year’s ride raised over $30 million dollars. Even more impressive is the fact that due to the generosity of corporate sponsors and the efforts of volunteers, all administrative costs associated with organizing and holding the PMC are covered, allowing 100 percent of the funds raised by the riders to be donated to cancer research.
Two years ago I rode in my first PMC with the original members of Sue’s Crew, Ray Murphy, Jim Mooney, Carlos Garcia and Bob Conerly. Sue’s Crew began riding in the PMC seven years ago inspired by Ray Murphy’s wife, Sue and her courageous battles with Lymphoma, Leukemia and skin cancer. Their commitment to Sue inspired me to ride to honor my family members and friends who have battled this insidious disease. During our training that year, we were all reminded again how this disease touches all of us when we learned that Bob Conerly’s wife, Beth had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Like Sue, Beth has been successful in her battle with cancer. This past year we were again reminded how fragile life is when we lost two members of the Sue’s Crew family, Rachel Garcia the twelve year old daughter of Carlos Garcia and the leader of Sue’s Crew, Ray Murphy. While the other members of Sue’s Crew and I will be riding this years PMC with heavy hearts, I will personally be riding with a renewed commitment to finding a cure for this disease. I recently learned that cancer has once again touched my family, and I am dedicating this year’s ride to my mother-in-law, Barbara Simione.
In addition, to the physical commitment associated with riding 200 miles in two days, the PMC also requires riders to make a sizeable monetary commitment. In order to participate in the PMC ride each participant has to personally guarantee to raise a minimum of $4,200.00. It is my hope that with your help I will exceed this amount.
So this is my challenge to you – Please take the time to visit my profile at http://www.pmc.org/profile/jw0204 to make a donation or send me a check made payable to “PMC-Jimmy Fund” to 96 Nut Plains West, Guilford, CT 06437. I ride the first weekend in August, therefore my window to raise funds is short.
Thank you in advance for your generous donation.
Sincerely,
Chip Walsh
I encourage everyone to make a donation to the Chip's cause whether big or small. As you know, every little bit helps.
