Why say no to gluten?
First off, gluten is found in most grains (with the exception of rice), and it is POISON! In my opinion, you might as well do shots of gasoline!! Lately, I have received some “challenges” from our clients regarding why we should not consume gluten. Most of you have heard this before, but it never hurts to hear it again.
To those of you with a medical background, please forgive me. I am going to explain this the way that I was able to understand it…as a foolish, scientifically challenged, English teacher (my main concern in 9th grade bio was to impress the boy that sat two rows over, three seats back, from me, and the equally important challenge of making it to 6th period with my hair remaining straight…for him, naturally).
We were not made to consume gluten. Over time, man has learned to process grains so that we could make them taste DELICIOUS and eat them (did you know McDonald’s buns have SUGAR added to them? No wonder they are so wonderful!!). If you went into a wheat field and plucked yourself some grain, it would not taste like that tantalizing sesame seed bun. HUMANS PROCESS IT TO MAKE IT TASTE DELECTABLE (can you tell from my adjectives that I am a recovering grain addict?)
Where my farmers at???? If a horse gets into a bag of grains and eats too much, what happens? It needs emergency evacuation of this “overeating disaster.” The grains will KILL a horse. So, in our attempts to FATTEN animals, we must be careful not to overfeed them with the source that FATTENS them (yes, I am stressing the word ‘fatten’) because it will poison them. WHAT DOES IT DO TO US????
As part of your digestive system, we have these little “things” that look like fingers called villi and micro villi. They act as the last filter to what goes into your system. When there is a toxin about to enter, they say, “whooooo we gotta’ get rid of this!” and your body creates antibodies to fight the toxin. When you put the ATROCIOUS poison called gluten into your system they must create antibodies to fight the effects of this.
I know what you’re thinking, “My body makes antibodies (whatever those are!)… PENNE, MANICOTTI,RAMIN NOODLES, BROWN SUGAR OATMEAL COME TO ME!!”
no, NO, nO!!!!!!
Some people’s bodies have such an intolerance to gluten that they can’t eat any without having a reaction (Celiac Disease), the rest of us, work hard to fight it. What does that mean? IT MEANS, YOU CREATE SO MANY ANTIBODIES TO FIGHT OFF THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GLUTEN THAT YOU CANNOT FIGHT OFF OTHER DISEASES OR ILLNESSES!
Cut this putrid poison out of your body and you will find yourself getting a lot less colds, flus, and all of the other horrid illnesses that bring us down!
What you feed your body is the most powerful medicine: Both doctors and patients are seeing how potent nutrition is in fighting disease, and it has none of the dangerous side effects of many medications.
“I try to push the Paleo Diet every second I get. In my private practice, it has cured more patients than any other supplement or medication I have used.”- Brooks Rice, M.D.
Here is a list of Autoimmune Diseases that can be prevented, improved and possibly cured with the Paleo Diet.
Great Monday morning WOD LP… and good name choice too.
I was reading the Main Site http://www.crossfit.com over the weekend. Often I find that the intructional postings LP and company provide are as important as the WODs.
I can’t help but bring this main site post from the NYTimes to your attention. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/the-anosognosics-dilemma-1/?hp The premis of the article is that one might be too dumb to know that he or she made a bad decision. This may seem self evident. But it raises the idea of whether the group is too dumb to help a person know that his or her decision is bad.
Peer pressure becomes a more critical dynamic with positive as well as negative overtones as a context against which to judge or consider a decision. I know we are in a “judgment free zone.” But, that does not apply uniformly. We can’t allow a friend to contine destructive conduct. We can be positive role models. Each act we undertake reqires a decision, judgment…some choice, and even not chosing is a choice. So now what?
This is a little overboard. Sorry this is extemely overboard… How many pro athletes are Gluten free? Does Gluten affect certain people in a negative way.. sure. But i doubt more than a small percentage of the best athletes (5% maybe) in the world are gluten free/paleo.
Another serving of Hatorade anyone?
another good article posting here about Gluten!!!
http://naturalbias.com/is-your-gluten-free-diet-still-harming-your-health/
Until they make beer gluten free the number of male athletes that are gluten free is virtually zero….and the Latin boys can’t exist without beans and rice.
Mark,
I know I'm biased, but I have to disagree. Please help me understand the benefits of a gluten enriched diet?
I’ve done a lot of research on this topic and I've done many if not most of the "fad" diets. I can assure you, that there's such a thing as carb crash which is linked directly to foods that contain gluten. Glotting the inside of your small intestine is another reason to avoid gluten.
I will agree that there are athletes in the world that include starches into their nutrition program. But I can only imagine how much better they would be if they were leaner without the side effects. Or maybe they take in starches in moderation and train really hard. Well….we'll never know.
What I can tell you is that CrossFit provides an arena for elite athletes to demonstrate their "fitness" and the numbers don't lie….1700 affiliates worldwide, a countless number of athletes, and the ones that make it to the games are either Paleo or some version of as gluten free diet. Lauren is certainly evidence of this as she's made it to the games two years straight, strict Paleo.
When I think about these so called fittest athletes, I think of people like Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, and Albert Pujols, I don't think their diets are too far off from a low starch/high protien diet. You could disagree all you want, but it's subjective.
I'll leave the ball in your court and welcome some researched comeback that supports gluten. Which off course, I will counter with the same.
Best,
DP
Ray, Ray, Ray…My Latin boy has completely abandoned beans and rice (and plantains for that matter!).
As far as Mark’s comment is concerned, I PERSONALLY do not that that major league athletes are the fittest in the world. Most are specialists that excel in their field.
LP I was referring to the pro baseball players, many of whom I am still friendly with. And DP is very different than those guys. If the Crossfit program (and free agency) were common back in 1967 … Right … I would have played till I was 45. Focus on diet is a recent phenomena… Say last 15 years. Baseball players of my generation did not pick up weight unless it was concentrated in a hot booty beer and hot dogs. Training table for my generation was McDonalds… No kidding. You are at the vanguard of the effort to mainstream thought about the benefits of diet and exercise. You have to succeed…it is critical that we all become your apostles in this effort. If you don’t we will have a national health care crisis that makes the bp oil spill insignificant by comparison.
booyaaaaa!!!!!!!! In your FACE!!!!!!!!
Mark, I did the same research you did and found the same information that you did, except I think there is a bit of overgeneralization going on in both arguements in support of both opinions. What emerges from both sides as the point of divergence is the issue of activity specific modifications to the diets. I can tell you that the Paleo books talk about the need to get complex carbs into one's system and various methods for doing it. I refer you to the cliff notes version of the Paleo for atheletes version…and direct you to stage VI Extened Recovery Foods. One reason for this is that it would be impossible to ingest enough vegetables and other paleo freindly stuff to get to the same place one gets to with Pasta. http://www.trainingbible.com/pdf/Paleo_for_Athlet… The discussion covers pasta, bread and other "non-Paleo" food.
Hope this all helps. And, a word on perspective, generally… "where one stands is largely a function of where one sits." The summary offers the opnion that over all Paleo is better. From my view, it has worked very well for me, except for the ice cream part, and may be the pasta part…..but, I can live without that…occasionally.
On the Quinoa Gluten Free story — as I said, it goes both ways, some of the stuff is glutten free and some is not. http://ezinearticles.com/?Is-Quinoa-Gluten-Free?&…
Google the diets of guys like adrian peterson, ladamian, LaBron or any NFL or NBA stud… Most start of the day with something on whole wheat or oatmeal. They also eat foods like oats, quinoa, rice and potatos. Are they guzzling down pasta dinners? I doubt it. I know where you are coming from and I try to respect it but the propaganda pushed by the CF community regarding paleo and zone are outlandish. Lower carb/high protein is great and most atheletes do eat like that but calling all grains poison? Sure, your wife is super fit and so are most of the crossfit athletes. But i think you have have had one to many glasses of the CF koolaid if you think glassman and CF will make the worlds most athletes better or fitter.
Name drop and google search all you want.
But I’m pretty sure quinoa, rice, and potatoes are gluten free, although high on the glycemic index. Get your facts straight bro!
DP
And Rice….seems like DP got that spot on. But, again, its a matter of what is used to enrich the rice. Good summary in this article. And, of course, the key is to do the research.

This is how I know gluten (and dairy free works) for me:
Five years ago I gave up fast food (sans Subway). On the few occasions I ate fats food I %^&* my brainsand spine out and lacked energy for the entire next day (maybe it was due to the dehydration suffered as a side effect, but the whole diareer thing was a nice red flag).
Then I gave up soda. Once again, if I consumed soda I felt sluggish for hours after.
Then I went vegan. This was the toughest and therefore the most scrutinized lifestyle change. a.k.a. I tested the waters. I ate meat after a month of a all vegan, high protein diet. I didn't feel a change. But I "cheated" and consumed dairy more often (because hey, vegetarian is just a few more letters than vegan, right?) Once again the sickness and fatigue returned.
When I started crossfit I decided to give meat a try but was happy that this strange new paleo diet still "outlawed" dairy.
Now if I eat anything "paleo illegal" (even high salt foods) I just don't feel "right". Also, the feeling of having my shorts fall off my ass is great.
Does this mean I still drink (yes – but I cut down. Now that I'm single again, I'm a CHEAP date). I still eat bad food on rare occasions as well. But most of it is desert food that's "bad for anybody."
Also, water makes you fat. It's true, don't believe the hype.
Does any know who "Mark" is? I know who the others are. Also water has to make you heavier not "fat." It weighs about 7.5 lbs a gallon and your body is mostly water. Staying hydrated is critical to peak performance. 2% reduction in water content can translate into a 10 % drop in athletic out put. Many bad foods enable your body to hold water … salt for example. Yet you need water to help flush your system waste.
Face it. You are going to be engaged in a life long chemistry experiment to achieve optimal performance. Some things that work now will not some time in the future. Some foods that are effective now for some specific purpose will not be effective later. I am a trial lawyer. When I am on trial I only eat specific foods because they provide energy and don't upset my stomach … Even when a client or critical witness does something that might be considered upsetting. It's not the same food I eat on the 14 th hole of a golf torunament. Good luck. lP keep loving those Latin boys….well that one in particular anyway.
Two all-beef patties, special sauce LETTUCE cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun!
…sorry.
