Don’t Believe the Hype!

WOD, 1.27.10:

Get your knee socks out…

Deadlift

So, we all know that the media is full of fallacies.  We know that the pulsating belt worn on the abs will not give you a six pack (contrary to Dennis, from Long Island, who sat behind me in the English 250,and wore it to class daily…swore it was the reason he “got all the ladies”); that the “Taco Bell” diet will not get you lean, and ExTends…will not improve your love life (yeah, you gotta stay up late to catch that one.  Ron Jeremy is the spokesman).  However, sometimes the media can slide one by us.  For years, I thought Cheerios would improve my cardiovascular health, Lean Pockets (JAIME) would be a great way to trim up, and a balanced meal included plenty of grains (hey, they’re at the bottom of the U.S. food pyramid!).  Hopefully, you read my recent blog regarding the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), entitled High Fructose Corn Syrup: Gluten’s Ugly Step Sister (1/5/10).

Check out these  asinine commercials that I recently saw (if you weren’t a CrossFitter, you might buy in):

It is so SUBTLE!  Why wouldn’t the “Corn Refiners Association of America,” want you to think that HFCS is okay for the ones you love?  I am sure Dave Thomas and Dick and Mac McDonald would pay to advertise that french fries, apple pies, and burgers served in white buns are good for you too! All we are asking is that you question what you see in the media.  Research it thoroughly.  Then, make an educated decision.

Get it Kristin!

That's right folks...it's not a rumor, D-$ is back..fo' real this time!

There's a great post on Robb Wolf's site by Matt LaLonde on how to evaluate nutritional research, aka/don't assume the abstract is correct: http://robbwolf.com/2010/01/25/do-high-fat-diets-
