“Best” is Relative

WOD, 11/6/09:

First: 1 mile run Time Trial

Then…

“Death By Pull-ups”

With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute… continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.

If you fail prior to minute 15, you will transfer to wall balls IMMEDIATELY, and resume on the number in which you left off in pull ups.

“I will promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day, from hour to hour, from minute to minute. But in that minute, I will do the very best I can.”

As yesterday’s WOD came to a grueling end, I was disappointed in myself.  I felt like PURE TRASH throughout my entire performance, and when I was done, I was dissatisfied with my time.

Then the thoughts come.

I suck.

Am I losing my touch?

Why have I gotten so weak?  I must not be doing enough heavy lifting.

I am going to get DOMINATED at my next competition!

I am doomed.  I’ll never get it back.

As I walked over to the doorway to catch my breath as my arms were pulsating and my gluts were quivering from the 15 rope climbs, 75 burpees, 100 med-ball cleans, 50 box jumps, and 25 toes to bar that I just competed (yeah, you all did it too!), I caught a glimpse of what is written on our wall at SCF:

“I will promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day, from hour to hour, from minute to minute. But in that minute, I will do the very best I can.”

Thank-you Lisbeth Darsh of CrossFit Watertown for those words.

Did I do my best?  Yes. Yes I did.  For 11/04/09 at 2:30 pm, on the third day of my WOD cycle, I DID MY BEST.

Our “best” will change everyday, every minute, every second.  We cannot expect the same results on a day-to-day basis.  As long as we are giving it “the old college try” daily, we are giving it out “best.”

My former high school and college athletes, my dancers, my actors, my musicians, debate teamers, spelling-bee champs…think about it…if one is doing something on a daily basis, he/she cannot expect to be 100% everyday.  If you are a former football, rugby, or soccer player, you were never 100 % every game.  How could you be?  The difference is, you had a team to hide behind then.  CrossFit exposes us.

So looking at Lisbeth’s words gave me promise.  They made me realize that I will come back.  I didn’t have to admit defeat, not even for that day.  Because I had given it my best.

There is a race in Branford Thanksgiving morning in support of the new YMCA. I think it is $20/runner. Nails and Stacy have expressed some interest. Noelle and I are considering it as well (though, I think I'll be "weather permitting" aka not below 40). Below is the email I rec'd from the coordinator:

    Mike,

Registration fees for the Y Run & Walk:

    Adults Kids

    Before Nov 1 $18 $10

    Nov 2nd -25th $20 $12

    Race Day $25 $15

You can find the links to register online at http://www.jbsports.com there you will also find the link to donate to the Soundview YMCA if that’s what you choose to do.

It’s going to a great event!! I hope to see you there. Please let me know if you have any questions!
