This week’s blogs have discussed some of the key components of CrossFit: intensity and functional movement. However, I believe the most  rewarding aspect of CrossFit to be community that is created in the gym, at CF social events, and Online through blog comments.  It cracks us up how everyone refers to our box as “the Shoreline“:

Yeah, I’m heading to the Shoreline.”

“You gonna be at the Shoreline?”

“What time you goin’ to the Shoreline?”

“The Shoreline”… as if it is an elite social club with waterfront views in a opulent neighborhood.  Just to look at it…it’s a warehouse…four walls, a garage door, and some pull-up bars in an industrial park.  But, you guys have made it so much more than that.  It isThe Shoreline” … the place you go and allow your blood, sweat, and tears (sometimes literally) to sink into the mats that cover the floor. The place where you look your fears in the eyes and SQUASH them with a barbell.  The place you go to celebrate your accomplishments. The place you go to see your teammates, your friends, and cheer them on as they drive with all of their might out of the bottom of a squat.  The place you go for “therapy” (and I’m not talking about squat therapy) after the most awful day at work or school.

So, they can keep their elite social club, and I’ll go to “the Shoreline.

The happy hour tomorrow (10/30) is to celebrate this community that we have created.  Please join us at Humphrey’s across the street immediately following the 6:30 pm class.

I found this write-up on Watertown’s blog.  It echoes my sentiments:

That phrase sounds silly — “platform partner” — but it’s a pretty cool principle when you think about it. Most gyms are full of people who are so alone — alone in their workout, alone in their heads, alone with their earphones and their music.

At CrossFit Watertown, you’re never alone. (And we don’t mean that in a creepy “make your number unlisted” kind of way.)

If you’re lifting on the platforms, you should all be talking to each other. “Chest up.” “Knees out.” “DRIVE!”

When you’re in the metcon, the lack of oxygen makes talking a weeee bit difficult, but an occasional “Go!” or a few words at the end of workout (”Nice work”) can mean the world to someone else.

Just something to think about. We all love to be strong and independent, but there’s something about a community that feels really good too.

Definitely a great blog–Nails and I really enjoy being a part of a group of people who appreciate hard work and provide support to one another–or at least a swift kick in the a** to work hard and then even harder. This is probably too cliche, but I’ll say it anyway: The quote that popped into my head about this week: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” And thanks to the great people at “the Shoreline” for making “the tough” fun–or at least, less ugly. :)

well let me just say SHORELINE CROSSFIT ROCKS!!!!. I must say i have never been sooooooo soar from working out in my life. I had heard about crossfit from a few people and never knew workouts could be so exhausting but yet so fun. The people i have met over the past couple of months are awsome and the teamwork we have is great. I have to say some days we 4:30 people are a littl like a disfunctional family but thats whats makes us work hard i guess. So let me end by saying thank you to DP,LP and Kelly for pushing me to be in the best shape of my life

Peace out

Great Post LP! Read the Milford blog. You’re on my short list. I will be attending Happy Hour this evening but working out in Milford. No I’m not afraid of a shoreline WOD but I’m super modified. That being said Dr. Mike is awesome! If you are tight sore ache or anything take advantage! I do!

I’m definately going to Dr. Mike thanks for the tip, I also agree Francine and I are very comfortable at SCF, great owners and a great group of people, we have been working out for quite awhile but have never had these kinds of results, I always said to previous trainers how come I gained weight instead of losing it, is it muscle? I just wanted to understand and they would say I wouldn’t worry about it you look fine, I feel so much better with the SCF approach, thanks LP for not saying I wouldn’t worry about it, you are the best.

Happy Halloween
