Fear Your Workout…

WOD, 10/01/09:

3 x 3 Back Squat

Then…

“Helen”

400 M Run

21 Kettlebell Swings (1.5 pood/.5 pood)

12 Pull-ups

I fear no man, but I fear my workout. If I don’t fear my workout, it isn’t hard enough.” -Lisbeth Darsh

It’s posted on the wall of our gym.  Most of you know the feeling…I call it the “bubble gut”…that nervousness before the 3, 2, 1, GO!!  We were at the Fight Gone Bad Competition this past weekend and one new CrossFitter commented on the obscene amount of people who were in and out of the bathroom holding their stomachs, speaking freely about their bowel movements (what is it about Paleo and CrossFit that lifts the ban and allows us to talk about poopy??!!!).  When she made this comment, I thought…this is a sure sign of people that fear their workout.

This pressure motivates us to do well…it makes us DO WORK!

I have been CrossFitting for a while now. And, whether it is prior to the 3, 2, 1, GO at the CrossFit games before an insane sandbag hill sprint where a mere 3 seconds can drop you 15 rankings, or alone, getting ready to pick up the barbell in my first rep of a WOD at SCF…I get that feeling, those “butterflies”, that “bubble gut”…I FEAR MY WORKOUT.

The more you workout, clearly, the better you’ll get.  A workout, such as “Helen,” may sound ‘easier’ to you now that you have completed 5, sometimes even 9 (SORRY) round workouts…PLEASE FEAR IT!

If it seems easy, YOU ARE NOT WORKING HARD ENOUGH. Don’t finish in 9.14 and say, “that wasn’t too bad.”  If this is the case, you should finish it in 8.10.  Go hard…if it feels easy..go harder!  We are in the business of making you comfortable with be uncomfortable.  At the moment that you feel comfortable, you need to amp up the intensity.  SO BRING IT TOMORROW (I know for most of you, “it’s already been ‘BROUGHTEN!’)

Announcement:  We will be partaking in the “Friday Night Sweat Fest.”  This is a happy hour that will take place after the 6:30 class on Friday night.  Will will do weighted lunges straight across the street to Humphrey’s.  ALL ARE WELCOME.  Who’s in??

unfortunately, the McWalters have to catch a plane to Hawaii early Saturday so we won’t be making this week’s “Sweat Feast” (but def will be at the next one)

on another topic, i was on CF Football y’day and came upon their “Nutrition” page. They are “Paleo + DAIRY”(??). So, as someone who loves me some milk, i have to ask: why are we anti dairy – or specifically milk? CFF promotes whole milk and muenster cheese (among others) as post-WOD foods to help the recovery process after a “strenuous WOD”. Thoughts?

McWalters,

The idea behind CrossFit Football is to gain massive strength over anything, while not losing metcon in the process. Have you seen John Welbourne, founder of xfit football? We would not call him lean by any standards. As an ex-NFL player, that is exactly what he looks like and he is strong as an ox. However, I’d lap him in a 400 m run. Milk will make you put on weight, which can make your lifts stronger. You will not appear LEAN, but you’ll put on mass. I always tell my male clients that want to “get huge” to drink a gallon of milk a day. Milk’s purpose is to fatten young animals. That is what it will do for you too (all the while spiking your insulin level, thus storing fat). So, each athlete needs to make a decision: Does he want to be “huge” with a bit of a gut, or lean with a six-pack. It depends on your goals. Good question…

Mike,

Try Almond Milk, it comes in original and vanilla flavoring. Personally I wasn’t a big milk drinker to begin with, but, I do put it in my coffee and in my frosted flakes (j/k).

On the topic of milk, Milk is a natural steriod. It contains an ingrediant called Boinve. So like LP said it willl make you stronger.

We also believe, you don’t neccesarily need milk if you are eating clean anyway. You’ll get most of your nutrients from your good fats, protiens and carbs everywhere else in your day to day diet.

If you desire milk that much, a good substitute for regular whole or reduced fat milk is organice milk. Has 2/3rds more omega 3s (good fats) than regular milk. Less fat usualy means less taste…..but don’t know for sure.

One more tip: if you take whole milk and pour it directly on your muscles, you’ll get super strong! For best results, try it on your abs!

All this milk talk makes me want some Oreo’s (double stuffed of course) to dip them in!!!

So are “Blanco Bars” made with “Blanco Milk” then?? Maybe it’s time to reassess everyone’s requests for them…

Thanks for the posts… like I said y’day, I’m looking for additional sources of fats, protein, etc. I’ve dropped the lbs but I’m starting to feel like I’ve lost strength and NRG. I’ll keep tweaking my diet until I find the right formula. Perhaps some Twinkies are the answer…?

NO TWINKIES and NO DOUBLE STUFFED OREOS!!!!! The cure…go to an ice cream parlor, and take a good look at what the majority of the adults that go there look like (picture ‘em naked). Then, go on the CrossFit games site (off of the main site) and check out those bods…which do you want?

Mike,

No worries, “Blanco Bars” are “Blanco Milk” free. For people that have been inquiring, I’m bringing some in tomorrow for people to try.

If I don’t see you guys, have a good time in Hawaii.

Attention Chris M- I called Vibram Five Fingers and asked about there return policy for your pair.

Here’s a link to their website, just download the return/exchange form from the FAQ section and send them back.

http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/technology/faqs.cfm

Just tell them you need a bigger size send them back. Worst case scenario, they send them right back.

Jenn,

You could buy almond milk a lot of places,I know Trader Joe’s def has it, I got mine Stop & Shop in the natural food sections. I’m working out tomorrow at 630am so I’ll leave some bars for you. Hopefully DP won’t eat them on you.

Carb boy….Deb and I are out for tomorrow nights festivities, we don’t have a sitter. But, we’re down for later in the month, I suggest October 30th (Friday night).
